How to create Custom Griptape Art

Every longboard needs griptape. Griptape is the gritty, sandpaper layer that is applied to the top of a longboard and skateboard deck, so your shoes will grip the board and you won’t slide off. It is an essential piece you need to make longboarding safer and also to be able to do tricks easier.

The most common color griptape is black and you can get it in a finer grit and coarse grit. The coarser the grit, the better it grips your feet. Griptape comes also in many varieties, patterns and colors. It comes in sheets and rolls. Most buyers buy a sheet that fits their longboard or buy per foot. The rolls are usually handy when you have to grip more than one longboard. You see, you have a lot of choices besides the common black.

Many longboarders and skateboarders make their longboard unique and their own as you can do more with the average sold griptape on the top side of your board.

There are many designs out there. Some harder and more complicated than others. But, there are also easy ways. Everybody can do it. You can start with a simple silhouette image.

What you need:

  • Of course your longboard
  • Image
  • Sharp utility knife
  • Griptape

Your longboard can either be new, blank or have already color. If it is not new, make sure the top of the board is free of your old griptape, not sticky anymore and sanded smooth.

First think of an image you want and print it the right size. Be sure to print it mirrored if your picture needs a certain way, like letters.

Make sure your griptape is the size of your longboard. Since you cannot see the sides of the board, it might be handy to outline your board on the backside of the griptape so you can place your image right where you want it. If you don’t, it might end up on the edge of your board, not in the middle if you want that, or somewhere misplaced.

Now you can either draw your image onto the back of the griptape or lay your image just on top.

Cut the silhouette with a sharp utility knife.

When done, peel of the back paper and gently lay it on top of your longboard. Press the griptape firmly onto your board starting either from one side to the other or from the middle going outwards. Make sure there are no bubbles. If you do see a bubble you can carve a little tiny slide in it and press it down to get the air out.

Voila, you can see your design and your natural or colored board.
